About
PDFMDTools helps people working with documents convert files to or from PDF and Markdown in their browser, without uploading local documents to a conversion server.
Who runs this site
This site is built and maintained by BayKolm, an independent developer. It is not a company product and there is no team behind it — one person writes the code, answers the email, and pays the hosting bill.
You can reach that person directly at contact@pdfmdtools.com.
What the tools do
Go from PDF to Markdown or Markdown to PDF. Local files are processed in your browser, with no conversion-server upload, account, or AI step.
Going the other way? If you already have Markdown and need a PDF instead, the same browser-only approach can turn a Markdown document into a downloadable PDF, with nothing uploaded either.
PDF to Markdown reads a PDF's text layer, identifies headings, lists, pages, and simple table structure, then creates Markdown you can copy or download. Markdown to PDF renders a Markdown document in a live preview and exports a searchable PDF with local page and layout settings.
Documents to Markdown also converts Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, EPUB, RTF, CSV, HTML and text files. It supports local batches, editable Markdown and ZIP downloads with readable embedded images. Merged tables can be retained as HTML inside Markdown.
Files are not uploaded or stored on a conversion server, including ours.
What the tool deliberately does not do
It is worth being blunt about the limits, because a converter that quietly produces wrong output is worse than one that tells you it cannot help:
- The PDF to Markdown converter does not perform OCR. If a PDF is a scan or photo without a text layer, it reports the missing text instead of guessing. The separate PDF to Text converter offers optional local OCR for English and Simplified Chinese + English, with its own tested errors and limits.
- Complex layout recovery is limited. Multi-column documents, dense tables, images, and reading order can still need review.
- Markdown to PDF is not a full desktop publishing system. Advanced LaTeX, complex Mermaid diagrams, blocked remote images, and unusual fonts may need changes to the source.
The guide walks through all of these failure modes with actual output from the tool, so you can see exactly what you would get before you rely on it.
How it is built
The page is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with no framework. PDF parsing is done by PDF.js, the open-source library maintained by Mozilla, which is bundled locally with the site. Hosting and the CDN in front of it are provided by Cloudflare.
The multi-document converter uses AnyDoc compiled to WebAssembly, with all runtime files served from this site. Its source dependencies and licenses are listed in the third-party notices. Scanned documents still require a separate OCR step.
There are no trackers beyond the aggregate, cookie-less request statistics Cloudflare reports for the domain, and there is nothing to log in to.
Advertising
This site is free to use and includes clearly labeled affiliate recommendations. We may earn a commission if you purchase through a recommendation. Some pages also display official affiliate image advertisements, which contact the network when their images load. Text-only recommendations do not load affiliate images or scripts. Clicking a recommendation takes you to a third-party service that may use cookies. See the privacy policy for details.
